Mother's Day Special

06 May, 2013 0 comments Leave a comment

Moms, mama, ina, nanay, mother, ma, mum – can’t live with them, can’t live without them. She is your first love who kisses all the boo-boo’s away. Then she becomes your worst enemy who always embarrasses you and just doesn't understand how hard your life is! She then becomes your nagger, yapping incessantly to push you to make something of yourself. Then she becomes your best assistant, helping you navigate the adult world. And finally she becomes your inspiration when you become a parent yourself.

Moms provide the best material for any stand-up comedian with their little quirks and strange habits. Their incessant Facebook like’s and comments, their constant pushing of food to you, their never-ending treating you like a baby – that’s why we love them!

In celebration of Mother’s Day this May 12, we’ve come up with a list of the worst TV moms* of all time. It’ll make you want to buy your mom a Mother’s day gift and give her a long hug!

1.         Lucille Bluth from Arrested Development

We at Quirks are suckers for this short-lived but critically applauded show (it’s where we got our company name). Lucille is narcissistic, selfish and extremely manipulative. Even after the Bluth Family lost their fortune, she still constantly treated herself to spas and face lifts. Her youngest is socially inept and dependent on her because of constant emotional abuse. In the finale, it is revealed that she is responsible for the Bluth Company’s illegal actions. Dishonest and a plain criminal? Oh the shame mother!

2. Angela Petrelli from Heroes

Talk about playing favourites! This matriarch of the powerful Petrelli clan was so obsessed with her eldest son Nathan ascending to the presidency, that she was willing to have her youngest Peter, nuke half of New York.

3. Estelle Costanza from Seinfeld

Just the sound of her screeching voice is enough to make us qualify her for the list. Overbearing and obnoxious, she once faked throwing out her back after catching George doing something nasty in the garage. Estelle sure knows how to pile on the Jewish guilt!

4. Irina Derevko from Alias

Shot her daughter upon meeting her for the first time in 30 years (who all this time believed that she was dead). Enough said.

5. Colleen Donaghy on 30 Rock

Brings new meaning to the phrase “Tough Love”. She constantly berated Jack and belittled everything he did. Relentlessly demanding, she was the kind of woman no one would dare to mess with – even at 80+ years old. When Jack was voted captain of the diving team, she said "What a great way to meet guys!”.

*To keep this post from getting too depressing, we chose fictional moms that didn’t fall into the hellish category (Betty Draper from Mad Men, Lettie Mae from True Blood, Gillian from Boardwalk Empire) so yes, there are a lot worse TV Moms out there that we didn’t include.

Now don’t you feel like calling your mom to greet her "Happy Mothers Day"?

Summer Projects to Beat the Heat!

17 April, 2013 0 comments Leave a comment

There's nothing like the summer heat to either make you waste the day away on your couch or push you off it and get moving. We're hoping you're more of the latter. :)
We believe that summer projects is what makes summer a beloved season-whether it's spring cleaning, scrapbooking, traveling or learning a new skill. Beyond escaping the heat, we believe that summer is all about expanding our horizons and heading into new directions.

So here's a list of what you can do to make this the best summer yet!

Have a party
A good old BBQ will cure just about anything. Have it beside a swimming pool and there's bound to be good fun all around. Bring our Ice Shot Glasses to make it the coolest party in town.

Learn to how to cook
Now that you're used to the heat, why don't you head to the kitchen? Put down those cameras and instead of taking pictures of good food, learn how to make it. Our Sparrow Serving Set will be right there to help you out in every step.

Create a better space
Do you remember all those times you've been "meaning" to go through your photos? And you've been meaning to have them printed? And you've been meaning to frame them? Well, NOW. IS. THE. TIME. Gather up all your favorite pictures and put them up on display with our gorgeous Stickr Frames. Best thing about it? There's no need for tools. Just stick them on the wall and if you're feeling antsy, easily peel them off and stick them somewhere else.

So there you go! We hope that our small suggestions will keep on your feet and make this a rich and activity-filled summer. Have more suggestions? Let us know in the comments section below!

Pop Up Shop #2: The Road Trippers

25 March, 2013 0 comments Leave a comment

After much hype and anticipation for the long vacation just around the corner, you suddenly realize that... YOU. HAVEN'T. PLANNED. ANYTHING. So what's a QT to do? Well, don't worry, we've listed some popular destinations to help you fill out those free days. So pump up your playlist, bring out your camera and gas up your car. We're hitting the road!

Manila Ocean Park
Perfect for both local and foreign tourists, Manila Ocean Park is the perfect place to see rich and amazing marine life. Adults and children alike will enjoy the Shark Encounter, Jellies Exhibit and so much more! There's also the hawker-inspired Makan Makan Asian Food Village for some Southeast Asian fare. And when you're exhausted from the day's adventures, sleep easy in the aqua-themed hotel, Hotel H20.

Viaje del Sol

Provinces included in Viaje del Sol are Quezon, Laguna and Batangas, each with their own unique soul and spirit. Learn to relax and live the simple and natural life at Viaje del Sol.

Solaire Casino & Resorts
The newest and certainly, the flashiest destination in our short list, Solaire Resort & Casino recently opened its doors and this might be the perfect time to visit it! With all the malls closed this holiday and the usual metro traffic down to a minimum, there's nothing stopping you from checking out what all the hype is about.
(for additional info, click here)

Pampanga for the San Pedro Cutud Lenten Rites
And last but not least, for those looking to incorporate a little religious reflection into their Holy Week, visit the San Pedro Cutud Lenten Rites and watch a re-enactment of Christ's Passion and Death. Not for the faint of heart, what makes the one in Pampanga especially brutal is that its passion play culminates with 3 penitents' actually being nailed to a wooden cross.

Pop Up Shop #1: Robot Lovin'

05 March, 2013 0 comments Leave a comment

Here at Quirks, we scour the world for curiosities that put a smile on our face. To our surprise, we find that we end up with some products that fit into a certain theme. This month, we realized our collection holds an assortment of robots (someone on our team apparently has a robot obsession).

Although our robots are definitely less technologically advanced, we still adore the wooden cubebots that we can reshape into a muscleman! Plus this robot who stands guard over our fridge door, daring us to open it (perfect for diet season!).

In the spirit of celebrating robots (yes, that’s how random we are), here are the top 5 favorite robots that we wish were real.

1.       V.I.C.I. from Small Wonder

If you’re a child of the 80’s, you remember V.I.C.I. from this science fiction sitcom (and if you’re a boy, you might have had a little crush on her). An acronym for "Voice Input Child Identicant", pronounced Vicki), the show revolved around an android in the form of a 10-year-old girl, built by Ted Lawson. V.I.C.I.'s features include superhuman strength and speed, an AC outlet under her right arm, a serial port under her left arm, and an access panel in her back. Despite this, the Lawson family tries to pass the robot off as their daughter.

Who wouldn’t want a cool sister who can fend off annoying stalkers (remember Harriet, the nosy neighbor’s daughter?), punch bullies, and help you complete homework at superhuman speed?

2.       Wall-E from Wall-E

Pixar’s most ambitious film to date stars a robot in a near-silent first half and instead of being bored, we are glued to the screens. How can this chunk of metal bring up so much sentiment in us?

In 2805, trash compactor Waste Allocation Load Lifter – Earth-Class (WALL-E) was left on Earth to clean the planet. Even though Wall-E and his partner Eve communicate largely though body language and robotic sounds, they exhibit more emotion that some humans we know.

3.       Rosie from the Jetsons

We admit, as kids (and yes, even as adults), this is the number one reason why we would love to have robots exist – to do household chores! Rosie is a middle-aged outdated robot from the animated series The Jetsons produced by Hanna-Barbera. Aside from a housekeeper, she also does occasional parenting and dispenses wisdom with a Jersey accent.

Let’s all just try to forget that Futurama episode where she was sent to the Hal Institute for Criminally Insane Robots (after murdering Elroy and Astro). That totally messed up The Jetsons for me.

4.       The Terminator from Terminator 2: Judgement Day

We still think that Terminator 2 is the best in the whole franchise. The final scene where the Terminator, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, sacrifices himself by drowning in a pool of liquid metal gets us every freakin’ time (yes, every time!). The plot involved the Terminator, a cybernetic organism—living tissue over a powerful, metal endoskeleton— being reprogrammed and sent back in time to protect John Connor while he is still a child. We would love to have a bulky bodyguard to protect us while cracking “Hasta la Vista baby!” or better yet “Chill out dickwad”.

5.       Bumblebee from The Transformers

How can we complete a robot list without The Transformers? Our personal favourite is not the all-knowing leader Optimus Prime but its more easygoing sidekick Bumblebee. In most incarnations, it is a small yellow Autobot that transforms into a compact car (in our heads, it’ll always be a Volkswagen Beetle). In him, we have an adventurous wisecracking friend, and a sweet ride.

Just be sure to note that we are referring to the animated series and definitely not the film versions .

Which robot makes your list? Let us know (so we won't feel like we're the biggest geeks)!

3rd Birthday Celebrations!

27 September, 2012 4 comments Leave a comment

They say time flies when you're having fun and boy, have we been having fun! It's crazy to think that it's already been 3 years since we first opened our tiny shop in Rockwell and crazier even that we're still there, thriving in the smallest retail space known to man. Did you know that our space in Power Plant was originally the window display of the previous tenant? When the next tenant moved in, they declined getting that small space and Power Plant had decided to install ATM machines there instead. Fast-forward to 3 years later and we couldn't be happier with where we are -- where people see crammed, we see charm; where people see chaos, we see character; where people see craziness, we see quirkiness!

So for the entire month of October, we've got 3 things lined up to celebrate our 3rd birthday:

Be part of the Quirky Troops faster to get your discounts! For every purchase of P250, get 2 stamps instead of 1 on your stamp card.

Get 20%-50% off on selected items.

End of October 2012 marks the opening of our biggest branch yet. The 3rd branch of Quirks opens at the ground level of SM Megamall Bldg. A.

And who said birthdays suck? We definitely love ours. So Happy Birthday to us and here's to hoping there's many more to come!

The Making of the Manila Mania Mighty Wallet

04 September, 2012 0 comments Leave a comment

Back in 2010, we discovered an amazing wallet. It looked like your regular, old envelope, from the red-and-blue color scheme to its thin and paper-like material. Soon after, we discovered the company behind this one-of-a-kind item. It took was 1 email to Dynomighty to launch the "paper wallet" revolution in the Philippines. And now, we're absolutely thrilled to introduce the first locally-designed Mighty Wallet. And here's a peak at how it all happened.

After 2 years, over 40 designs and spawning enthusiasts, fans and imitators, our Mighty Wallets are still the most-loved "paper wallet" in the market. Introducing one spectacular design after another, we came to realize that we wanted a Mighty Wallet that was specifically for the Filipino, for our customer.

Looking for a design team to help with our vision was easy. We got our friends from Punchdrunk Panda, a local design/retail agency, to put what we wanted in concept to paper [wallet]. We knew we wanted a design that our customers can relate to and understand, like a secret language between all Filipinos. More than that, we wanted a design to promote our local culture. Rich, diverse and uniquely our own, the saying "only in the Philippines" doesn't have to be a put-down against our country. Instead we see it as an endearing way of describing our perfectly chaotic Philippine life, one that all Filipinos love to hate. But really none of us would want to have it any other way, because we know there's literally, no place like our Home.

With a concept in mind, artist, Kasey Albano, was a natural fit for us. Her pretty and colorful illustration style is the perfect avenue for us to translate our Philippine wallet concept. The design should be appealing, striking, lovable and of course, still have that signature quirky feel.

So here's what we came up. Kind of awesomely perfect, right? We know.

Can you guess all the different icons? Go!

So say it with us now... Be mighty, Manila!
